Licensing

How Licensing Works

Digital identity collections on Ownora use a three-layer licensing structure that gives creators control over how their work is used while providing clear rights to collectors.

Layer 1: Namespace Terms

All collections created under the ownora@ namespace are subject to Ownora's namespace governance terms. These define the baseline rules for content standards, prohibited content, and dispute resolution. Think of this as the "house rules" that apply to all collections hosted on the platform.

Layer 2: Display Grants

By publishing content on the Verus blockchain and making it accessible through Ownora, creators grant the platform a non-exclusive license to display, cache, and present their content to visitors. This grant is necessary for the marketplace to function -- without it, we could not show collection thumbnails, descriptions, or artwork.

Layer 3: Owner Licenses

Creators can attach specific license terms to their collections. These define what collectors can do with the content they own. Common license types include:

  • Personal Use: Collectors may display and enjoy their collectibles for personal, non-commercial purposes.
  • CC-BY-4.0: Collectors may use, share, and adapt the content, provided they give appropriate credit to the creator.
  • Full Commercial: Collectors receive commercial rights to use the content in products, merchandise, and other commercial applications.

Verifying Licenses

License information is stored on-chain within the collection identity's content multimap. The full license text may be stored on Arweave for permanent, tamper-proof reference. Both the license type and the creator's cryptographic signature are verifiable through the collection detail page.

For Creators

When creating a collection through the Ownora Desktop application, you can select your preferred license type and attach the full legal text. Your license choice is signed with your identity key and stored permanently on-chain, ensuring it cannot be altered after publication.
